Sarabjit’s hanging deferred till April 30: Pranab

By newindian

A few weeks back I watched the news about Kashmir Singh being released from Pakistan’s Jail. Pakistan was magnanimous in its decision. This time NDTV 24×7 brought to me the news of the deferred execution of Indian prisoner Sarabjit Singh.

Union External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee informed the Lok Sabha regarding the latest development on Sarabjit on Wednesday.

Another glimmer of hope emerged for the Indian prisoner, who was earlier slated to be hanged on April 1 after being convicted of involvement in the 1990 blasts in Pakistan.

Pakistan’s Human Rights Minister Ansar Burney has said Sarabjit can be saved if Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf grants him pardon and converts his death sentence to life imprisonment.

There are also reports that Burney has sent a representative to President Pervez Musharraf requesting him to convert the death penalty to life imprisonment for the convicts who have been languishing in Pakistani jails for more than 10 years.

This is a distinct change in tone as the minister had on Tuesday said that Sarabjit Singh was a terrorist and not entitled to any sympathy.

Meanwhile, India has formally sought clemency for Sarabjit Singh. I will update this post as soon as NDTV 24×7 brings to me further information. The India-centric news channel is available in the US only through DirecTV.
