Poll: Indians want less media control

May 2, 2008

More people in India want the media to be free to publish news and ideas ”without government control” than those who would prefer some state intervention, a new worldwide poll on freedom of press said on Thursday.

The survey by ‘WorldPublicOpinion.org’, released to commemorate World Press Freedom Day also found that a ”modest” majority of Indians realised the importance of media freedom.

As many as 52 per cent of those polled in India said it was important to have freedom of the media, and an equal number said that people should have the right to read whatever is on the web, the poll including views from 20 nations, said.

Kalaghoda festival

February 12, 2008
If I was in Mumbai this time of the year I would definitely be at Kalaghoda to witness the decade old festival that echoes the spirit of Mumbai. All I could get is the News coverage on NDTV 24×7. I would like to share with you what I gathered while watching NDTV.The Kalaghoda festival is a unique platform for showcasing new talent and attracts hundreds of enthusiasts.

This year the Kalaghoda art festival looks bigger, brighter and more colourful. The otherwise commercial lanes of a business district now turn themselves into art exhibits.

Space is created for artists who feel that, art cannot be bound by closed walls and class divides of traditional art galleries.

True to the spirit of a street festival, day one had traditional acrobats from rural Maharashta.

If you are an Indian living in the US (like me), you should immediately subscribe to DirecTv because:

  • It is the best TV service provider in the US in all respects.
  • NDTV 24×7 is the best Indian news channel.
  • DirecTv is the sole provider of NDTV 24×7 in the US.

Gujarati registration material for Super Tuesday

February 7, 2008

Twenty-four states across America go to the polls today in the Super Tuesday primaries, which could decide the Democratic and Republican Party nominees for the presidential elections 2008.

As voters set to cast their vote it may now be easier for some Indian American voters to have their voices heard.

None of the channels in the US spoke about Gujarati registration material. For the first time ever in the 2008 US presidential elections residents of the state of New Jersey – which has a large Indian population – will have access to voter registration material in Gujarati. I know this as I was watching the coverage on the Super Tuesday on NDTV 24×7.

According to the report, in New York, in 2006, 83 per cent of Asian-American voters were asked to show identification causing many to feel intimidated.

English-speaking voters however were not asked for ID. Forty per cent of Pakistani origin, 38 per cent of Bangladeshi origin and 17 per cent of Indian origin voters could not speak English well and required the assistance of interpreters in order to vote.

NDTV 24×7 is India’s best news channel and it is home to the best of journalists. It is available in the US only through DirecTvOpen in a new window.

Missing India

February 1, 2008

I was watching the coverage of the India’s Test match with the Aussies on NDTV last night. It was a very entertaining and informative show hosted by one of Indian Television’s finest cricket journalists, Sonali Chander. Ajay Jadeja was my favorite cricketer when he played at the international level and I enjoy watching his commentary on NDTV’s Cricket Show.
I’m so glad I subscribed to NDTV. I remember the time when i had just arrived in the US some years back and was missing India desperately. One of the things that reminded me of India most was TV channels.

I was looking for a quality cable TV service that delivers the good Indian TV channels ever since i moved here. My search ended when I found out about DirecTV. The following were the reason I chose DirecTV over the other service providers:

· You get FREE installation of a 4-room DIRECTV system.
There’s no equipment to buy. (Lease fees apply.)

· Nationwide to neighborhood, DIRECTV has your favorite local channels included in every programming package.

· DIRECTV delivers a digital signal 99.9% of the time,
rain or shine.

· You can order high-speed Internet with your DIRECTV service through a variety of DIRECTV-preferred Internet providers. You can even save on your DIRECTV bill by doing so.

Plus my favorite Indian news channel is exclusively available on DirecTV.

French President in India

January 25, 2008

The French President is in India this week to be the Guest of Honor at the Republic Day parade. This is another of the high profile western visitors to India in the recent years. He is going to sign on several important MoUs that will strengthen the ties between the two countries. France has always been a strong ally of India and this will go a long way in adding more sweetness into the already well-built ties. Various agreements on a whole range of issues are on cards.

India, France give new impetus to strategic ties

This is the story about the same on the NDTV website which is my favorite Indian news channel. I watch NDTV even here in the US on my DirecTV connection. DirecTV is a great TV service with impeccable service standards and great signal quality even in rough weather.

I highly recommend NDTV on DirecTV for all the fellow NRIs here in the US.

Stock market news

January 23, 2008

The Indian stock market bounced back smartly after the manic crash that was witnessed yesterday. The US Federal Reserves rate cut brought the bulls back and they were on a buying spree right through the day which resulted in lifting the market up by 864 points. This was seen as a buying opportunity in large cap stocks. India is a growth story like no other in the world and finally the fundamentals took over the irrational tension that had gripped the market yesterday.

NDTV had an excellent report on the above story. Its available on DirecTV here in the US.

Celluloid magic: Fans await the release of Ashutosh Gowariker’s magnum opus Jodhaa-Akbar, starring the regal Hrithik Roshan and ethereal Aishwarya Rai in lead roles.

I cant wait to see Hrithik and Aish back on screen together. I have enjoyed both the past works of Ashutosh Gowarikar, Lagaan and Swades. Swades especially is a movie very close to my heart. Makes me wanna go back to India every time i watch it.

I saw a report on this on NDTV 24*7 last night on my DirecTV connection. I’m so glad we can receive these, the best Indian channels here in the US.

NDTV reports : Brown to upgrade UK-India ties

Press Trust of India

Wednesday, January 16, 2008 (London):

Prime Minister Gordon Brown will embark on a two-day visit to India from Sunday with an avowed objective to upgrade Britain’s relations with the emerging Asian giant to bring them on par with its ties with the US.

“He wants to really upgrade Britain’s relations with India and China to a much higher level, the same as (that with) the USA,” Lord Swraj Paul, who will be part of the India-leg of his two-nation tour said.

Brown, who has pledged to accord “very high priority” to strengthening and deepening relations with a “pulsating, dynamic India,” leaves for China on Thursday en route to New Delhi, his first visit as Prime Minister to the country after taking over from Tony Blair in June last year.

The British Prime Minister, son of a Church of Scotland preacher and a known India admirer, recognises India’s status and feels that by raising Britain’s relations to a higher level “all countries can gain” and help the world.

Paul, who along with other NRI peers, MPs and Indian community leaders had a meeting with the Prime Minister at number 10, Downing Street yesterday, said Brown is “very keen to involve all countries in the fight against poverty and in India even more so as there is still a large chunk of the population which is still below the poverty line.”

Brown, who will attend the fourth India-UK Summit, would discuss with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh ways to “come even closer” and step up trade and investment between the two countries, Paul, who is also British ambassador for overseas business, said. This just goes to show the fundamental shift that is occurring in world geo-politics under the influence of the economy. The growth engines of yesteryears have become weary now. The new kids on the block like India and China are  adding new vigour into the engine of teh world economy. India is today a goldmine for investors. We as NRIs and PIOs should be the first ones to capitalize on this.

I believe this is a testament to India’s growing status in the world economy and shows what a goldmine our motherland has become for investors all over the world. We NRIs should be the first ones to capitalise on this oppertunity and give back to the country that has given us so much.

I saw a report about this on the NDTV 24*7 channel. Thank god we can still receive Indian channels here in the States. I have a DirecTV connection and i’m so happy with it.
